Magnus Carlsen wins Norway Chess for the seventh time, Gukesh third

by Shahid Ahmed - 07/06/2025

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) drew with Arjun Erigaisi in the Classical battle. It was enough for him to win Norway Chess for the seventh time in his career. In Armageddon, the World no.1 got checkmated by Arjun Erigaisi. Fabiano Caruana (USA) defeated the World Champion, D Gukesh to finish second. It was not as smooth as Caruana would have liked. In the final moments, he misplayed which allowed Gukesh to get back in the game and fight for a draw. However, he also missed his opportunity and lost. Gukesh finished third. Carlsen won NOK 700000, Caruana 350000 and Gukesh 200000. Whether it was the last Classical event for Carlsen and Nakamura, is only a speculation at this point. Only time will tell the answer to that. With FIDE World Cup 2025 being just a few months away, it won't be a surprise to see at least one of them back there, if not both. Arjun checkmates the World no.1 in Armageddon

"I am relieved, of course. I got to say, I quite enjoyed the day today. Obviously I understood that there was a very real chance that I was going to lose the game but I was kind of at peace with that. I was just trying to fight. The game itself wasn't the best game but I think it was a great fight." - Magnus Carlsen shares his thoughts after winning the tournament.

Arjun - Carlsen: 1.5-1

Arjun Erigaisi (2782) found himself in a situation where he could push for a win against Magnus Carlsen (NOR, 2837). The World no.1 gave up an exchange in the middlegame.

Position after 15...Nxe4

16.Bxe7 Qxe7 17.Qxc6 Nef6 18.Qxa8 Qe3+ 19.Kh1 Qxd3 20.Nf4 Qxd4 21.Rad1 Qe5 22.Rc1 Nf8 23.Rxc8 Qxf4 24.Qa6 Qxf1+ 25.Qxf1 Rxc8 the queen and knight vs rook and double knight endgame created chances for both players. Arjun had relatively lesser chances than his opponent. The game eventually ended in a draw.

Caruana - Gukesh: 3-0

It was evident from the play that both Fabiano Caruana (USA, 2777) went all-in and wanted to win the Classical game to maximize their winning chances. In a winning position, Caruana faltered in the final moments.

Position after 47.f4?

47.f4? allowed Black to get back in the game 47...d2 48.Bxc7! Qxc7 49.Qxd5 Qxf4+ it was not easy but Black would have had some good chances to salvage a draw. Instead, the World Champion blundered 48...d1Q?? 49.Bxd8+ Kxd8 50.Nc3 and it's over.

Wei - Nakamura: 1.5-1

A tactical mistake by Hikaru Nakamura decided the fate of the game as Wei Yi defeated him and won their rematch too.
