Aditya Mittal astounding at 125th anniversary of Werder Bremen with a 2713 performance

GM Aditya Mittal scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 125th anniversary of Werder Bremen Tournament. The teenager was the top seed of the event and he certainly delivered a top class performance in one of the strongest chess tournaments to take place at Bremen. He performed at 2713, finished a full point ahead of the competition and gained 13 Elo rating points. Aditya also crossed 2600 in the live ratings for the first time in his career. GM Pawel Teclaf (POL) scored sole 6/9 to finish second. Four players - GM Bobby Sky Cheng (AUS), GM Szymon Gumularz (POL), GM Zahar Efimenko (UKR) and GM Vojtech Plat (CZE) scored 5.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth according to tie-breaks.



Top level performance by the top seed

GM Aditya Mittal headed into the final round with a full point lead at 6.5/8. He drew his final round game against GM Vojtech Plat (CZE) to become a clear champion. This was Aditya's first individual rating tournament he played in 2024, and he won it in a fantastic way.

The idea behind 26...Nh6 is simple. Black wants to access White's light square weakness on the kingside using his queen, Qg4-f3-g2 and then reroute the knight via f5-h4-f3. 27.Qb3 Qg4 28.Rc3 Nf5 29.Qc2 Rxc3 30.Nxc3 Nh4 31.Qe2 Nf3+ 32.Kh1 Rc8 Black won the game in the next few moves.
